And the Algarve Chimney Photo Competition winner is…

by Meravista

Back in June, Meravista challenged photographers of all skill levels to get their cameras out and capture a quirky, eccentric, ornate, bizarre or beautiful Algarve chimney. The competition was open to professional and aspiring photographers alike, with €100 cash prize up for grabs for the winning snap.

There were no set rules for entering, other than the photograph had to be of an Algarve chimney and it had to be an original photograph by the entrant.

So, did you take the challenge?

The competition closed on 31st August and the Meravista judges have been busy deciding the winning entry. The aspect that surprised our judges the most was that almost all of the submissions were pictures of the oldest chimneys around: very few entries featured modern, ‘machine-made’ chimneys. Deciding a winner was a tough job! Thank you to everyone who entered. Here are the entries that Meravista considered to be among the best.

Special mentions:

lolhao chimney Algarve Portugal

This unique chimney in the old town of Olhao was submitted by Ricardo M. The judges enjoyed the innovation used by the creator of this chimney which looks like it’s at the back door of a café or restaurant. Looks like a good way to avoid smoke and smells for the neighbours in the alley!

mabel's favourite chimney Algarve Portugal

Mabel the Dog’s entry made the judges laugh the loudest. However being ‘related’ to a Meravista team member and the fact that we  suspected a  touch of Adobe Photo-shop foul play meant we had to disqualify Mabel. Having said that, the chimney near S.B. Messines is a genuine Algarvean gem.

double stack chimney Algarve Portugal

Entitled ‘Double Stack’ we enjoyed this unusual photo from the Montgomery family. The angle makes it look like the chimney stack is on the roof of a house, and it appears that a stork family have built a new nest on top of an old one. Perhaps they don’t believe in recycling!

And the winner is Deborah T from Faro, with this superb snap of an Algarve chimney in Canal. We particularly liked the way the house is trimmed with bright colours and the ornate arches on the chimney. A very pretty finish on what is obviously a very old property. Congratulations Deborah, a nice cash bonus is on its way to you!
