Things to do in the Algarve for January 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME TO 2014!

This month I thought I’d tell you about of some of the events that happen on a regular basis where there are groups to join, things to do, places where you can make new friends, and generally find out more of what goes on all over the Algarve. Of course these are just the tip of the iceberg and if you don’t find what you want here then check out your local Junta de Freguesia or any of the local English press where you will no doubt find lots more.

Did you know?

At the Museum in São Brás there are many activities on offer and here are just a few:

Ballroom dancing Algarve PortugalOn Mondays at 6.30pm there is Ballroom Dancing and there is also Argentine Tango from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. For more information call 916 984 177

On Tuesdays there is the Bobbin Lace Workshop from 6pm to 8pm and the contact is Amigos Office at 966 329 073

On Thursdays there are Portuguese Classes for Foreigners starting at 11am and the contact is Conceição at 966 157 984. There is also theNeedlework Group, from 2.30pm to 5pm. Find out more by calling 966 329 073.

Join with Tai Chi which is offered from 11am to 12.30pm on Fridays - contact 289 841 527.

Dancing and Music

Zumba dancing Algarve PortugalEvery Monday at the International School of the Algarve, on the N125, in Lagoa, there is Scottish dancing for all levels. From 7.30pm until 9.30pm the bagpipes will swirl, the floor will be bouncing and everyone will be reeling! Just bring a pair of soft shoes, dress comfortably and join in the fun. The cost is a mere €1.50 per person per session. Tel. 282 356 029 for more details.

Jillian holds Zumba classes on various days and times and different places throughout the Algarve, give her a ring to find out where she will be at any given time if you want to expend some energy on the dance floor. Contact Jillian on 919 289 506.

Sport

Tennis in the Algarve Portugal

For those of you who want to get out there and play some sports or run a mile, you can’t go wrong with these activities.

The Tennis Tavira informal tennis club meets on Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 12pm at the Holiday Park, Pedras da Rainha, Cabanas de Tavira. Membership is free but court fees are €2.50 per hour. Contact numbers are: 281 326 097, 919 221 621 and 289 355 787.

The Hash House Harriers are a social running club, with branches in expat locations around the world. Comically known as a ‘drinking club with a running problem’ (or is it a running club with a drinking problem?), the Algarve chapter hold a run each week, held in a different area, and kept secret until a few days before the run takes place. Cycling in the Algarve Portugal

Activity Algarve Bike Rides organises a gentle cycle ride over flat terrain of around 30km every Sunday. They also organise various other rides for different fitness levels on different days and times. If you don’t own your own bike then you can hire one.

Playing bridge Algarve Portugal

Algarve Bridge Sessions are held on Thursdays at 2.30pm at the Dom Rodrigues Hotel, Tavira. If you plan to attend, and/or if you need a bridge partner, then contact Lynne by email on [email protected]. Beginner lessons are available and are held every Thursday morning from 11.30am to 1.30pm at Jorge and Lia’s snack bar in Tavira.

Lagoa Writing Circle meets on the first Tuesday morning of every month, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. If you would like to know more about this then contact 963 518 184 or email [email protected]

On every second Friday there is a Quiz Night at Suzie's Bar in Silves. The cost is €5 and includes dinner. Suzie´s Bar is located on the river front across from the old bridge. Quiz starts at 8pm. Tel: 969 537 951.

A little socializing is a fun way to get out and about too:

Want to meet up with new people? Make new friends? Why not try the Meet & Mix held on Wednesdays from 3pm to 6pm at the riverside Bar by the Old Military Bridge in Tavira. This is aimed at the over-40s. Michele or Danielle can tell you more, call 968 620 057.

Toddler Algarve Portugal

Every Friday at the Almancil Community Centre (Centro Comunitário de Almancil) a mother and toddlers group hold a meeting at 10.30 am. This is where you can meet more mums and babies and socialise you and your baby at the same time. Tel. 962 123 860
