Things to do in the Algarve for July 2014

It’s official, summer’s here and July is upon us once more. The tourists are arriving and the pace is stepping up. There are so many events going on right now that I’m dizzy just trying to keep up. Take a look and see what you fancy doing during this month of sunshine!

Ongoing events

Sand Sculptures Pera Algarve Portugal

The sand sculptures are up and running again this year in Pêra and once again these giant works of art have a musical theme. Using 40 thousand tons of sand, the sculptures are set in 15,000m2 of land and are a true wonder to behold. You have until the 25th October to visit.

  • From 6-12 years old €4.50
  • Adults €9 and for those over 65 years old there is a 15% discount.

Face Painting Vale do Lobo Algarve PortugalIn the Vale do Lobo Praça (square) children’s entertainment will be laid on every evening until 14th September. From 6.30pm to 11pm there will be a bouncy castle, face painting, balloon modelling, live music and much more to amuse the kids.

The square next to the beach in Carvoeiro will be holding live music every night starting at 8pm. This is a lovely, relaxing way to spend a summer’s evening and you can enjoy this until 28th September.

Amigos do Museu in São Brás hold a needlework workshop every Tuesday and Thursday at 2.30pm. These are a friendly group of ladies of mixed nationalities who welcome everyone from beginners to experienced people who want to wield a needle or two (yes they include knitting).

July events

Dance World Cup Algarve Portugal

There’s another World Cup competition happening right now! The World Cup for Dance. The finals are taking place from 29th June to 5th July in Parchal, Lagoa at the Arade Congress Centre. Featuring children and young adults, performing many different categories of dance, this promises to be an exciting event, so don’t miss it.

Arabian days (and nights)

Faro is once again putting on its traditional Moorish Fair from the 2nd to the 6th July. A Moorish village, complete with a giant souk (Arabian marketplace) will appear in the Vila Adentro area of Faro. The event will focus on the ancient customs of the Moors and there will be live belly dancing, Arabian music and food. The fair will be open each evening from 7pm until midnight.

A ticket will set you back just €5 (children under 6 years old go free). Family tickets (2 adults and 2 children between 6 and 12 years old) are €15 and a five day pass costs €20.

Moorish Festival Arabian Market  Faro Algarve portugal

Salir, in the county of Loulé, will be holding its own Festival of Medieval Arts from the 11th to the 13th July, where the life and times of the Muslims and Christians, during the period when they disputed the ownership of the Algarve, will be recreated. Vila Real de San Antonio is also hosting Arabian Enchanted Nights from 17th to 20th July. Featuring an Arab Souk, donkey rides and street entertainment from 6pm to midnight. Of course there will be Arabian music and dancing for more entertainment.

Play in the Park Aljezur Algarve Portugal

On the 4th July the Aljezur International School presents their Play in the Park 2014 at Parque de Merendas, Barão se São João. Written and produced by the school, the theme this year is Westerns and The Good, The Bad and the Mediocre is the title of the play: The eccentric mix of townsfolk in Bodge City are driving the sheriff, “Chick P. Curry”, nuts. This production promises to be a hoot for the whole family.

Now here’s something different for the kids; Puppet Shows!

The puppets will appear on the following dates in July in the square (Praça Luis de Camões) in Lagos from 8pm to 9.30pm: 1st, 3rd, 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, 29th and 31st.

Those intrepid Algarve Angels are at it again. They’re putting on “Arabian Show Day” on 12th July with two shows; one at 2pm and another at 7pm in The Centre Algarve in Moncarapacho. The Algarve Angels have worked tirelessly to raise funds for The Centre, a charity which is building a holiday resort for people with special needs.

A €20 donation secures you a ticket and children under 12 may enter for free with each adult ticket. Each ticket provides a Moroccan buffet, the show, entertainment and much more besides.

Arabian Show Algarve Portugal

Silver Mask Theatre Algarve Portugal

On 4th July at O'Gradys 12 Bar in Silves, the Silver Mask Theatre Group is presenting a one act play entitled "Trifles". The performance starts at 9pm and lasts 30 minutes and there will be live music afterwards. Entrance is €5 per person, which includes one drink. It’s €12 if you’d like dinner before the show, but you need to book.

Classic cars

Once again Vilamoura is putting on the annual Classic Car parades. From the 11th to the 13th July you can see more than a hundred of these beautiful “old crocks” in all their glory. Starting at 7.10pm on the 11th July they will be driving a circuit round the Vilamoura Casino. On the 12th July, they will all congregate in São Brás and from 11am to 12.30pm they will drive to The Conrad Algarve in Quinta da Lago.

Leaving Vilamoura at 9.30am on the 13th July, they will pass though Lagoa around 10.30am, the Autódromo, Portimão at 11am and they’ll arrive in Vila Vita Parc, Porches by noon.

International School Bowen Therapy Algarve Portugal

Dogs and Horses

The International School of Bowen Therapy will be holding ISBT-Canine and Equine Bowen Therapy courses in Odiáxere from 22nd July to 27th July. The Canine courses will be held on the 22nd and 23rd July and the Equine courses on the 26th and 27th July.

Faro Internaional Bikers Festival Algarve PortugalThe big bikers meet

The 33rd annual Faro Moto Clube Bikers Festival is taking place from 17th to 20th July in Faro this year. It’s one of the largest biker’s festivals in Europe, where literally thousands upon thousands of bikers from all over the world meet for their annual jamboree. Steve Harris (the founder of Iron Maiden) will be there with his British Lion band, alongside at least seven other rock bands. There will be a campsite, food and drink outlets, toilets, children’s areas and of course “The Bikes”!

Sweet tooth

Lagos is hosting its 27th annual Confectionary Fair from 26th to 27th July from 6pm until midnight. Not only are there a host of stalls to tempt you with their dazzling arrays of homemade sweets, but you can watch how these delicious confectionaries are made. It doesn’t matter if you’re a grown up or a small person, you will be delighted as you drool. All this will be accompanied by live music to put a spring in your step. So take a trip to the Sports Complex opposite McDonalds and be prepared for a great evening out.

Golf Dog Charity Algarve Royal Course Portugal

The Royal course in Vale do Lobo is putting on a great golfing day to aid the work of Saint Francis of Assisi Dog Kennel & Sanctuary in Loulé. A stableford competition is to be held starting at 11.30am on 31st July and is open to all golfers. So, here’s your chance to play one of the famous Algarve golf courses and help this wonderful, charitable organisation at the same time.

For a fee of €60 you get an amazing round of golf with snacks and drinks provided on the 9th hole (no credit cards please).
