Music is in the air... in the Algarve

by Sun’s Dragon

The Algarve certainly likes its music in all shapes and forms and this year it’s going all out to share this delight.

From January to December, every year, the hills really are alive with the sound of music in one form or another coming from all over the Algarve. From opera to down home country music, traditional Fado to rock and roll, music dating back centuries to the latest hits. There’s music for everyone and it’s all going on right here. Even the Sand Sculpture festival in Pera is representing music this year, with gigantic mounds of sand cleverly sculptured into musical icons such as Elvis ‘the Pelvis’.

Algarvean villages wouldn’t dream of having a fair or festival, whether it’s gastronomic or crafts, without having music belting out, dancing in the street and generally turning everything into a party.

Many of the smallest restaurants will squeeze musicians into their establishments to provide live music for their patrons. Bars and cafes regularly hold karaoke nights, Céilidh nights and folk nights, just as long as there is music to tap your feet, hum or sing along to.

Spotlight on May

During the month of May, Loulé is putting on an event that actually combines art, music, video and dance. That’s quite an achievement and it’s a first for the Algarve.

Faro is hosting its annual International Classical Music festival throughout May, featuring orchestras from all over Portugal, including the famed Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.

There’ll be a right old shindig in Estoi when the Festa da Pinha takes place on the 2nd May, and Portimão will be jumping with their annual Jazz Festival from the 11th to the 15th of May.

Yep, the Portuguese know how to have a good time with music.

What’s going on in your town? Do you have an event to add to our music calendar?
