Winter Boltholes in the Algarve

BRITAIN is edging closer to an ARCTIC FREEZE with blizzards, record low temperatures and polar gales set to cripple the country in weeks. Scientists have re-issued stark warnings ahead of what       some have claimed is set to be the coldest winter for a century.   Daily Express, October 2014.

Whether or not the forecast proves to be right, the chances are the UK and many other countries are in for a chilly and probably wet time over the next few months.

When you’ve lived in the Algarve for a few years, it’s easy to forget how stressful and depressing winters can be for some – hazardous roads, disruptions to the already stretched transport services, flood damage….

We do have winters here in the Algarve, but they are moderate and mild with bright sunny days and the temperature from November to February averages at around 15°C.

If you think that escaping the misery of another cold winter is just a pipe dream, think again. Property prices in the Algarve are still at a record low, and with a rise predicted over the next few years, now could be the best time to invest in your home in the sun.

What’s more, it takes under three hours to fly to the Algarve and there are regular direct flights to the region’s Faro Airport from most European destinations. So what are you waiting for? Here’s a taster of properties on offer across the region and there are plenty more where these came from.

Golfer’s escape

This modern one bedroom apartment is ideal for the avid golfer who’s seeking some good winter golfing weather. Vale Rabelho is 40 minutes’ drive from Faro Airport, near the popular town of Albufeira. Located between the magnificent 18-hole Salgados golf course and nature reserve, and Galé’s stunning beach, this great escape is on the market for just €84,000 – what a bargain!

Sunny days and cosy nights

This two bedroom apartment in Carvoeiro, with spectacular golf and ocean views, is a great buy at €185,000. It comes fully equipped with a large terrace and BBQ, so you can make the most of the beautiful winter weather in the Algarve, and the apartment has a wood burner too, so you’ll be cosy if the nights get a little chilly. All amenities are within walking distance and Vale Centianes beach is just 500 metres away.

Winter on the beach

There’s nothing quite as peaceful as an Algarve beach in winter. This one bedroom apartment has direct access to the beautiful Praia do Alemão in Portimão, where you can relax and enjoy the warm sunny days.

The property is south-facing and is situated in a quiet and private condominium with its own pool. It has great rental potential, so there’s an opportunity to generate some income when you’re not using it. It’s yours for €125,000 and it comes fully furnished and equipped, so all you need to do is book your flight and pack your case.

Right on course for the winter

Wherever you are in the Algarve, you’re never far from a golf course, but if you’re really into the sport, how about spending the winter right next to the famous São Lourenço course in the exclusive Quinta do Lago resort? Relax in this two bedroom home with magnificent views. Watch play from your own terrace and, when you fancy taking a swing yourself, you can walk to the first tee in a few minutes.

Situated in the old part of the town, this renovated three bedroom, two bathroom townhouse has bags of traditional style and character. The property is finished to a high standard and comes fully equipped and fully furnished for €450,000. If you’re retired, but don’t want to leave your family behind to move abroad, splitting your time between two homes is a great way to enjoy a balanced lifestyle. If you work in your homeland, six months a year in the Algarve may not seem like a practical idea. But in our modern world there are many opportunities to work from home and travel between countries.
