It was Maria Lourdes who started the Quintinha Rescue Centre in 2000, but it was with a heavy heart she had to relinquish and close the centre, which had become known throughout the Algarve as the Goldra Dog Sanctuary. Due to her advancing years and poor health, Lourdes was unable to continue her struggle to rehome or care for the 100 plus dogs and 65 plus cats that were abandoned or simply rescued from the streets. That was four years ago now; at the time there was panic everywhere with people wondering what on earth would become of the waifs and strays if Lourdes quit.
Jan Henderson stepped in, along with her band of volunteers, and renamed the rescue home The New Goldra Dog Sanctuary. For the past four years, Jan has lived on site and cared for the dogs on a daily basis, relying heavily on volunteers and donations to meet her huge monthly bills.
This month, on Sunday the 18th May to be precise, there is a lunch at Parky’s Bistro in Vilamoura. The aim of the lunch is to raise as much money as possible for the New Goldra Dog Sanctuary. The set meal (vegetarians are catered for) will cost €20 per person, with €5 going to the sanctuary. To reserve a table contact Sue Ward on 289 462 204 or email [email protected]

ARC Horse Welfare
ARC became an official non-profit association in May 2013, just a year ago. Since that time they have assisted 300 horses that have been neglected or abused. This has been accomplished by receiving and dealing with reports of neglect or by helping horse owners with food, medicine and vet care.
In order to raise more funds for their work, they are holding a lunch on Saturday the 24th May at Eleanor Jane Kemp’s residence in Tavira. The cost of the lunch is €15, with €5 going towards saving horses from slaughter. There will be an auction and a raffle and people are asked to bring along a donation suitable for either.

Animals in the Algarve need YOU!
Times are hard and all animal charities, throughout the world, are struggling. Why?
More and more animals are being abandoned as owners find it increasingly difficult to support their pets. This is compounded by the reality that people across the world have less to donate to charity.
So, if you can, please help our animals in need in the Algarve. If you can’t attend these charity events but would like to help, whether by volunteering or donating, The New Goldra Dog Sanctuary and ARC Horse Welfare would be delighted to hear from you.
