This year the Algarve celebrates the 28th Shellfish and Seafood event - Festival do Marisco, hosted by Olhão in east Algarve, and takes place at the Jardim Pescador Olhanese on the town’s boulevard from 10th to the 15th August.
This is the biggest, the best and the most ambitious fish festival of all in the Algarve, held in the biggest fishing port in the Algarve, next to the biggest fish market in the Algarve. Yes, you’ve got it! It’s the big event of the region. Olhão has a reputation to live up to and they surpass themselves each year with this festival.
For a small entrance fee (€8 for adults and €3 for children aged seven to 12) you can join the thousands of visitors enjoying a fantastic night out from 7.30pm to 1.30am. Advance tickets are on sale between 2 and 10pm in Olhão’s Ria Shopping from 1st – 15th August, or at the box office during the event.
There are hundreds of stalls preparing, cooking and selling an enormous variety of fish and shellfish, including oysters, shrimp, langoustines, lobsters, clams, cockles, razor clams, squid, octopus, crab and much more. All of these come in different shapes, sizes and dishes, including cataplanas, paellas and seafood rice to name but a few. There’s a lot of boiling, grilling, frying and baking going on all evening long.
Along with plenty of fun and entertainment to amuse children of all ages, the festival is especially famous for its nightly concerts. With the stage constantly filled with a mix of local bands and traditional dancers, each night also features a well-known singer or group, guaranteed to keep everyone singing and dancing until the early hours. This year’s headliners are:
10th August – Tony Carreira (one of the most famous singers in Portugal)
11th August – Carminho (young singer brings haunting Fado traditions to the festival)
12th August – Xutos & Pontapes (Portuguese rock band, famous at the festival)
13th August – João Pedro Pais (popular singer on the Portuguese music scene)
14th August - Tributo U2 UK (the most famous U2 tribute band)
