Grand Variety Show in aid of Algarve Oncology Association

by Almonds & Oranges

The Lagoa Auditorium is the venue for this year’s Grand Variety Show, which is being organised by British expat Jenny Grainer, local author and one of the original founders and committee members of the Algarveans theatre group. The 2013 show aims to raise funds for the regional cancer charity Associação Oncólogica do Algarve (Algarve Oncology Association - AOA).

Seven years ago the AOA launched the Algarve’s first radiotherapy unit in Faro. It remains the only one in the region. Proceeds from the show will help to fund the charity’s development project, Casa Flor das Dunas, which will provide much-needed temporary accommodation for patients receiving radiotherapy treatment at the Faro unit.

Pinkz SteedeAs the radiotherapy unit in Faro is the only one in the region, many patients have to travel 200 or more kilometres each day for a treatment session which lasts just a few minutes. Casa Flor das Dunas aims to offer these patients a comfortable and homely environment in which to stay during their courses of radiotherapy.

Having been treated at the unit herself, this is a cause which is very close to Jenny’s heart. The charity has already raised a large percentage of the minimum required to be eligible for EU funding and Jenny hopes that the Grand Variety Show will help them towards their €500,000 goal.

A bumper night of entertainment

The show, now in its sixth year, promises a bumper night of entertainment and includes acts from across the Algarve. International singer Pinky Steede will be appearing alongside well known Algarvean guitarist Pedro Frias, local singer Michele, a troupe of young dancers from Albufeira Academy of Dance, a popular folk choir, Dutch accordionist Jan and teen protégé Catarina Barão, who will be performing her debut single ‘I Just Wanna Be in Love.’

The evening’s programme will be presented by Jenny and Ian Carfrae. Ian is best known for his time with the UK’s The New Vaudeville Band who had the 1960s hit single Winchester Cathedral.

The show will take place at the Lagoa Auditorium, Rua do Centro de Saúde, 8400 - Lagoa, on Saturday 2 November at 8pm.
