Played for the first time in 2007, this major competition has gained ground each consecutive year. Top golfers from all over Europe will be descending on Vilamoura in October and their fan club following will be arriving with them. This tour just confirms that the Algarve is one of the top golfing areas in the world today.
The course & competition
The famous Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura, designed by the incomparable Arnold Palmer, plays host to the tournament this year. The tournament is staged by the European Tour and the Portuguese Tourist Board: with a huge infrastructure for tourism already in place, there should be no problem to accommodate players, their entourages and fans.
With more than 35,000 avid golf fans expected to attend you can be sure that a large proportion of these will be Irish. Irishman, Shane Lowry, is looking forward to defending his 2012 title and his fellow countrymen are looking forward to cheering him on once more. If he succeeds in capturing the title this year he will be the first player to win in two consecutive years. However, the competition will be fierce with over 3 million euros in the prize money pot.
