As usual, the Algarve is bursting with events and May is no exception. From start to finish, this month sees a wide diversity of things to do, places to go and people to see.
We kick off in fine style with a Public Holiday on the 1st of May for Labour Day celebrations. On this day, all sorts of entertainment is on offer throughout the Algarve with parades and processions, parties and picnics. The roadsides, parks and forests are full of families enjoying a long, leisurely day picnicking in the sunshine. Check out your nearest town or village to see what they are hosting for your May Day pleasure.
Festa Da Pinha
The ‘festival of the pine cone’ falls on the second day of the month and a fantastic parade of horseback riders, horse drawn carts and wagons covered in palm leaves and flowers travel the road from Estoi to Ludo in the morning. Frequent stops are made at the bars and taverns along the route and a big picnic is held in Ludo before the return trip in the evening. The roads are lined with people, many of whom come from far and wide, cheering on the “merchants” and encouraging them on their way. Viva la pinha!
Fine Wines and Food Fair
From the 9th to 12th May sees the Fine Wine and Food Fair hosted by Vila Vita Parc in Porches. A gourmet extravaganza organised by Hans Nuener, their resident two Michelin starred chef. Top Michelin starred chefs and cellar masters from across Europe join in to make this the crown dining event of the year. On offer for the four days are lunches, wine tasting sessions, dinners and gourmet feasts, a wonderful chance to experience dining at its best.
Day of the City
On the 13th May is the annual “Day of the City” featuring a Historic Parade and Medieval Fair in Vila Real de San Antonio. This is a huge parade with everyone dressed in medieval costumes, much to the delight of the crowds lining the streets, clapping and cheering all the way. The fun lasts well into the evening with a fantastic party atmosphere.
Music in the cities
Portimao Jazz festival starts on the 15th May and lasts through to 23rd of May with many different groups and bands providing a huge variety of music for the jazz fan.
Faro holds its annual International Music Festival for the whole month of May with classical performances from leading Portuguese orchestras, including Orquestra do Algarve and Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.
Sand sculptures in Pera
From the 25th May to the 25th October, the town of Pera presents the 2013 11th annual FIESA - International exhibition of Sand Sculptures. This year features a musical theme with fantastic sculptures made of tons of imported sand on display.
