Things to do in the Algarve for September 2013

by Sun’s Dragon

As summer continues the full agenda of entertainment and events in the Algarve just keeps on going. September sees us just as busy as ever with a large variety of different pursuits to follow. This month we’ve included some great charity events for some exciting days out - the perfect way to have some family fun and laughter whilst helping the less fortunate.

  A helping hand

On Saturday 7th September the Museu do Trajo in São Brás is organising the Festival de Experiências to collect books and learning materials in Portuguese, aimed at providing a library for the children of the Nossa Aparecida community in Cuamba, Mozambique. You can enjoy the unique experience of swapping a book or a game in exchange for a selection of ‘experiences’ including massage, beauty treatments, workshops, dance, handicrafts, tarot, children’s activities and more. Get your Portuguese books and games and pop along between 3pm and 9pm for a good afternoon out.

Their Voice Horse Sanctuary Algarve Portugal

On the 14th and 15th September Faro is hosting a Beach Football Marathon in aid of CASA (a help centre for the homeless). This fun filled event will be held at Praia de Faro Sports Area, so all you footy fans can grab your shorts (and wallets) and head to the beach to help raise some much needed dosh.

The stalwart ladies of Desperate Horsewives, a group of horse-loving women based in the Algarve, are organising a fantastic family fun day on Sunday the 15th September to raise funds for Their Voice Portugal, a horse sanctuary. From 11am to 5pm at Monte da Ribeira (between Loulé and Salir) it will all be kicking off. Some of the delights on offer include face painting for the kids, food, drinks, a car boot sale, a children’s choir and an auction. There will also be a ‘Human Gymkhana’. What is that? It’s worth going just to find out!  All this and more for €5 per adult and children under twelve go free. Find out more on the Fun Day’s Facebook page.

Refugio Dos Burros Estombar Algarve PortugalThe Golf for Strays Competition takes place at Pestana Gramacho Golf Course on 6th September in aid of the Donkey Sanctuary in Estombar. This special round of golf costs €40 per person with a Pairs Better-ball Stableford format and includes lunch and prizes. Guests may join the lunch for €15. Maximum handicaps are 28 for men and 36 for Ladies. Contact Alan Wilkins on 282-359-558 or email [email protected] to register.

Adventure in the skies and on the ground

The (very) fit and the (very) brave among us will love the next two items.

Running in the Algarve PortugalThe Beech99 Boogie and Free-fly Festival lasts from 28th September through to 13th October and offers free-fly coaching as well as other sky-diving courses. With over 350 expected participants dropping out of the skies onto a drop zone at Portimao Airfield it promises to be an enjoyable time for flying high. If you fancy joining this event, check Skydive Algarve for more information.

The Running Bug European Ultra Marathon is a major test of strength and stamina as runners carry their own gear, including sleeping bags, provisions, clothes and water for this gruelling 127km run. Participants arrive on 20th September and compete in 3 stages from Silves to Carrapateira between 21st and 23rd September. The race costs €550 to enter and includes support, medical care, tents, water and a celebratory meal at the finish. Transfers from Faro to base camp and back to Faro are also included. This promises to be a tough one so check the Running Bug website for more information if you want to have a go!

  Showtime!

Three very different types of music are featured in these events.

Forever 90s Monte Gordo Algarve portugal

Every Sunday in September (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th), the Casino Monte Gordo presents the unconventional and irreverent Forever 90’s show, featuring the diverse dance and musical trends of the last decade of the 20th century. The one-hour show starts at 10.30pm and tickets cost €14 including one drink, or you can get there early at 8.30pm and enjoy two dinner choices: fixed menu for €30 or A la Carte menu for €40. Both options include the show. Contact the Monte Gordo casino to make reservations.

On the 14th September, Vila Real de Santo Antonio will host the final of the 6th annual Amateur Fado Competition. The haunting strains of this typical Portuguese music will be heard from 10pm at the Centro Cultural António Aleixo.

Multiphonic – the multi award-winning saxophone quartet are putting on a concert at the São Brás Museum on 28th September. The programme Americano ma non troppo (An almost American Evening) includes music from Gershwin and Bernstein among others. Starting at 6pm, tickets cost €10 per person.

  Fun & Festivals

These events are chalk and cheese to each other but their uniqueness is likely to appeal to all.

Alcoutim are hosting their annual Parties from 13th to the 15th September. Sports, traditional games and music are just part of the programme. Held at the Alcoutim quayside and with no entry fees, these promise to entertain the whole family.

Alvor Boardwalk Algarve PortugalThe full moon walk takes place in Portimão on 20th September and promises to be a walk with a difference. The walk takes place along the Alvor boardwalk and starts at 9pm. The aim is to show the beauty of the coastal areas in a ‘new light’. Residents and tourists are welcome to join in but register soon – walks are limited to 30 participants.  Contact 282 480 412 or email [email protected] to register.

The county of Lagoa has its annual public holiday on 8th September and celebrates the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Luz - the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Light, the patron saint of Lagoa. The preceding two days and on the 8th itself, religious services will be held throughout the day, with the festival opening in the evening at 8pm. This is Portugal, so of course there will be feasting, music, dancing and fireworks in the town square late into the evening.

  Food junkies

Fish Festival Albufeira Algarve Portugal

You just can’t get away from a good selection of food in the Algarve.

The 16th Festa do Pescador (Fisherman’s Festival) combines with the Albufeira Folclore festival from Friday the 6th to Sunday 8th of September. Held at the Albufeira Praia dos Pescadores each evening from 6pm, you can enjoy the freshest fish and seafood, sweets, music, dancing and more while making the most of traditional Algarvean hospitality, sea breezes and the fabulous sunset. A great event for all the family.

Rota do Pestico Route 2013 Portimao Algarve PortugalPortimao’s Rota do Petisco (Tapas Route) takes place from the 6th to the 13th September and has this year expanded to include Alvor and Ferragudo, just across the river. Last year this event drew over 35,000 visitors. Collect a ‘passport’ to guide you to all the restaurants and cafes participating in the Petisco tour, where you can sample snack-size portions of traditional Portuguese food and sweets.  Enjoy a variety of the specially prepared tasters for a standard price of €2.50 for each portion, including a drink. Have your ‘passport’ stamped for each dish you sample and qualify for other events and freebies if you get enough stamps! A wonderful opportunity to get to know the social, gastronomic and cultural sides of this great town.

Variety is the spice of life and there is no doubt that we get plenty of that here in the Algarve. All these fantastic events are just a small selection of the events hosted in each town and city across the Algarve. In addition, we enjoy all the weekly and monthly markets, the huge spectrum of every day sports and activities available and a wealth of annual festivals, which all make for a sun-filled whirlwind of happiness - for the young, the old and the in-betweens!
