Things to do in the Algarve in September 2014

by Sun’s Dragon

September is another bumper month for activities in the Algarve and whilst I can’t possibly cover them all, here’s a taster to whet your appetite. Start making plans!

In the capital

Faro is a wonderful place with many attractions and it does its best to cater to diverse interests and cultures. Here are some of the highlights for this month.

Faro is celebrating its 7th anniversary as a city for the first two weeks of September; sports events, concerts and exhibitions will be taking place for everyone to enjoy.

Faro Algarve Festival

American Car Festival Faro Algarve

The American Car Show will be staged in Faro on the 6th September where there will be live bands such as Memphis Breese and the Guinness Bros with Rikki Ryan. Plenty of American cars will be on show and you can take your own along if you want. Lots of stalls selling all sorts of goodies will be there and you can count on good food too. This promises to be a fun day out.

Worthy causes can be fun

We all get a buzz when we help others whilst having fun ourselves don’t we? Here are some September ideas for supporting charities and having a good time.

A Hot Dog BBQ – taking place on the 6th September at the Museum in São Brás in aid of abandoned animals. Starting at 7pm, there will be live Latin and Brazilian music to jolly things along.

Tickets are €15 and for more information you can call 966 329 073 (or Marie 914 673 117; Gisela 289 843 917; Yvonne 938 695 695).

On Sunday 14th September SOS Algarve Animals is hosting a lunch from 1pm at the Don Camillo restaurant in Almancil. This super lunch with live music (sing your own song too if you like) is to aid their sterilization programme; a much needed agenda in the Algarve.

If you’d like to go along call Frytia on 918 919 730 or Ginie on 968 632 420.

The annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk in commemoration of International Alzheimer Day will be taking place on 21st September in Lagos. Meeting at the City Park (by the playground equipment) and starting off at 9am; hundreds of people will show their solidarity for those who have been struck by this awful disease. A minimumdonation of €2 is all you need to join in and all proceeds will go to Alzheimer Portugal. A total of seven cities will take part in Portugal this year.

Contacts for this event are: Liliana Ferreira at Cabinet Alzheimer, We Care, Teach, Train, Tel: 919 888 501 E-mail: [email protected] OR Marisse Mitchell Tel: 961 805 909 E-mail: [email protected]

Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning AlgarveMacMillan Cancer Support - “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” will be taking place all over the Algarve (indeed all over the world) on 26th September. One such morning will be at Julie’s Taverna in Santa Bárbara de Nexe from 11am to 2pm. Organised by Sue Collins and Gina Carrington along with their trusty helpers; you are invited to enjoy tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes as well as fun and games. Everybody is welcome and there’s bound to be a raffle and possibly an auction! Last year the ladies in Santa Bárbara de Nexe raised over £1,000 for these fabulous nurses, who make lives easier for cancer patients and their families.

Find out where your nearest MacMillan coffee morning is being held and go along for the fun and enjoy meeting others who want to help too; or maybe I’ll meet you at Julie’s?

Flamenco Festival Algarve

More festivals and fairs

Where would we be in the Algarve without our local festivals and fairs?

The 17th Fisherman’s Festival will be taking place at the Praça dos Pescadores in Albufeira from 5th to 7th September. Party time! There will be traditional snacks and live music exactly as the Portuguese like to do things; so, dig out your glad rags....

Lagos is putting on the 13th Flamenco Festival with three shows at the Cultural Centre; Real Flamenco, Arte Flamenco and Desplante Flamenco on the 11th, 12th and 13th September respectively.

Tickets cost €10 per show or €25 for all three shows starting at 9.30pm each night.

Here are some of the fairs that will be taking place during this busy month of September:

For the sports fans

Here are a few of the sporting events happening this month – diverse is the word!

5th to 7th September the Blancpain GT Series Algarve Round Racing Weekend will be taking place at the Autodrome in Mexilhoeira Grande.

For more information visit the Autodromo do Algarve website.

Charity Golf Day AlgarveHere’s something for all those keen golfers out there. Gramacho Golf Club is laying on a “pairs, betterball, stableford competition” on Friday 5th September, in aid of the local Donkey Sanctury.

The price is €45 per person which includes lunch and prizes; a buggy costs €20.

And here’s another charity golf day, this time at Pinheiros Altos in aid of the New Goldra Dog Sanctury; an individual stableford competition. If you don’t play golf, you may go to the lunch only!

For further details call Elaine Archer on 914 119 545.

Pinetrees Riding Stables will be holding their “full moon ride” on Tuesday 9th September. Riding a horse to a secluded spot overlooking the sea; having a picnic whilst watching the setting sun; then riding back to the stables under the light of a full moon. It’s got to be fantastic.

Roller Hockey Algarve

Now this should get the adrenaline flowing. On the 13th and 14th September a Roller Hockey Tournament will take place in the Montes de Alvor Sports Pavilion. Don’t miss out on the fun!

Over 35? Got a football team? You’re invited to compete in the 6th ISL Algarve Veterans Football Tournament, taking place on Saturday 20th September. Teams booked so far are from England Belgium and Portugal. Organised by ISL you can contact them via their website

Last but by no means least

The snack bar, Jakare, in Perna Seca is holding an open mic/music night on 20th September. Kicking off at 6pm, this promises to be a good night out and is very popular, so booking is recommended. Play an instrument, tell jokes or recite poetry - anything goes.

Call 965 687 753 for reservations and further information.

Music Night Perna Seca Algarve

Of course there are concerts, Fado singers, recitals and karaoke nights galore. There are also sewing circles, wine tasting clubs and choirs to join, beaches to play on, hills to explore and a wealth of kid’s activities to enjoy. You’ll also find waterparks, the sand sculptures in Péra and all kinds of fishing throughout the Algarve. In fact, there’s so much to choose from that I feel sorry for the tourists who only have a limited time to make the most of this paradise.

I’ll leave you with a little tip. The Right Juice, is a film that was made in the Algarve and is about an English banker who moves here to start an orangery. Due to be released on 29th August at the Teatro das Figuras in Faro; watch out for it. Here’s the trailer.
