10. Vale do Lobo – The Royal
Vale do Lobo Golf
The Royal is not only one of the oldest courses in Algarve, but it is also one of the largest luxury resorts in all of Portugal. Originally designed in the 1960s by Sir Henry Cotton, the course was split into two creating two separate courses, the Royal and the Ocean. American architect Rocky Roquemore created the Royal's new 9 holes in the 1990s. One of the most famously photographed holes is the 224-yard, par 3, cliff top 16th hole.

8. Quinta da Ria

7. Oceanico – Faldo

Part of the Amendoeira Golf Resort, the Faldo is one of the more newly designed courses in Algarve. This 18-hole championship modern golf course matches any of the other famous courses in the area. With desert scrub bunkers, rocky outcrops, wandering water hazards and olive trees, the Faldo calls for strategic play.

5. Oceanico – The Victoria

Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Victoria opened in 2004. Designed as a world-class tournament course, the Victoria didn’t have to wait long. The WGC World Cup was played at the Victoria in 2005. Two years later, they hosted the Portugal Masters. This doesn’t mean you can't get yourself on the greens, but be warned the hazards are severe. With numerous water hazards and the threatening bunkers you will have to choose your shots wisely.

4. Quinta de Cima

Designed for tournament play, the Quinta de Cima course will attract golfers from the professional to the accomplished amateur. The numerous challenging water hazards, from a stream that runs across the fairway, to numerous ponds near the greens, make the Quinta de Cima a challenging golf getaway.

3. San Lorenzo

Designed by architect Joe Lee, the San Lorenzo first opened in 1988 and is considered one of the top three golf courses in all of Algarve. With a white sand beach and crystal blue sea as the backdrop to this course, as well as the hazards of the Ria Formosa, makes the San Lorenzo not only a spectacular place to golf, but also a challenging one.

2. Oceanico – The Old

The gem of the Algrave golfing region is without a doubt The Old course. Designed by Frank Pennink, The Old opened for play in 1969, making it is the second oldest course in all of Algarve. With well-maintained tees, tree-lined fairways, small greens and well places hazards; The Old is a challenging course for a golfer at any level.

One of only a few Jack Nicklaus signature courses, Monte Rei opened for play in 2007. Set in the hill towards the Spanish border, the mountain views are spectacular. The course it self is challenging, with loads of water hazards and huge bunkers even the most accomplished amateur will have his work cut out for him.
