With absolutely no shortage of unusual and interesting events going on across the Algarve all year round, here are two of the more unusual options that can bring fun and enjoyment to you and your family and friends.
Albufeira Christmas Grand Prix
As promised, Albufeira is holding its annual Grand Prix 8km run or 4km walk on 15th December. This is a ‘fun run’ for everyone to join in and if you feel you want to walk the 8 km route or run the 4km route – that’s fine too. Around 800 people are expected to show up, some will be dressed for Christmas and others won’t so you can just do your own thing and have some fun.
There is no entry fee and no prizes, so no pressure either - just a whole lot of people from all walks of life, all nationalities and all ages out for a day’s enjoyment. Everyone is meeting outside the Caliços Municipal Market at 10am for the start. The market is based near the GNR and secondary school in Albufeira town. To register you can contact [email protected]
Swim for shoes
Now here is something for all you brave hearts, and you don’t have to be Scottish to participate. The Holiday Inn Algarve (formerly the Hotel Garbe) are hosting their 10th anniversary Christmas Day Swim AND the New Year Day Swim.
Here’s how it works; you dress up in your Santa outfit on Christmas Day and arrive at the beach at Armação de Pêra for 11am and then you go for a swim or a paddle or anything else that gets you wet. Don’t worry, there are usually around 100 to 150 other brave things all joining in the fun too.
On New Year’s Day you can meet up at the same place and at the same time but then the outfits being worn are pyjamas! There will still be between 100 to 150 people joining you and you will still have to get some of yourself wet!
After you’ve had your dip, you can all repair to the bar at the Holiday Inn, which will be serving hot Bombas on Christmas Day and hot chocolate on New Years Day. Both of these fun events are free but any donation will be very gratefully received to buy new shoes for some very needy children.
The aim is to get each and everyone of these children off to a well shod start for 2014. Just bear in mind every goose pimple you get and every Euro you donate will count towards a poor child's feet. If you want to get some extra dosh for the kiddies you could always get sponsorship for your dip in the sea; either for one or for both events, wouldn’t that be a good idea?
Whether you run, walk or swim or even go for all three; it’s a super chance to gather the family together or round up a bunch of friends and have some fun!
