But if you’re willing to go through the planning application process, you’ll find you have more to choose from and you’ll get more land for your money. It’s important to make sure that the land you choose allows you to use it to build a residential dwelling. The general rule is, if a plot of land includes a former dwelling, even if the existing building is beyond restoration, you should be able to get the required permission to build.
That said, Portugal has introduced some of the strictest planning laws in Europe to protect and enhance the environment, which is definitely a positive if you’re planning to make the Algarve your home.
