The gossip is spreading, rumours abound and alarm bells are ringing: have you heard that the Algarve is in for a cold summer this year?
What about swimming in the pool? Surely we won’t be deprived of having our cooling-off dips? Will the lemons on our trees in the garden survive? We need them for our sun-downer drinkies! Or won’t there be a sun going down? Surely it can’t be true?
Don’t be daft: this is the Algarve we’re talking about. On the other hand, I suppose it will be a tad cooler than Dubai’s 50 degrees in the shade.
Winter
Admittedly we did have a cool winter this year, with temperatures comparable to a mild English summer as usual. There I was, snuggled into boots, jeans and jacket, marching down the promenade of Quarteirato meet up with the girls for our weekly lunch in the sun.
And at the same time on the same promenade were the tourists in their shorts, skimpy tops and not much else. Yeah right, it was a cool winter. Of course, unlike me, these same tourists had just left snow, ice and lashing gales for some winter sunshine here in the Algarve.
My ‘winter bedding’ (a summer duvet) was packed away six weeks ago and is now cheerfully gathering dust at the back of the cupboard, so will I have to unearth it again before October? What about the winter woollies? Don’t tell me I shall have to haul down the carefully packed boxes that I laboriously stuck at the top of the wardrobe weeks ago?

Summer
Nah, I suspect this summer will still have us all scurrying indoors to escape the heat and slathering on the sun lotion every time we venture outside. I’m pretty sure we will still have to put up our sun shades in the car to stop us from getting a blast of furious heat upon opening the door and baking as we enter.
I’ve no doubt the beacheswill be filled with folks frolicking in the glorious sunshine or lying prone ‘catching the rays’. With blue, cloudless skies above us, clean air around us and hot sand beneath our feet, this is the order of the day here during our long hot summer. Rumours, gossip and scaremongering won’t change anything.
THE 7-DAY FORECAST FOR THE ALGARVE
Business as usual
So be gone you scurrilous rumour mongers and take your doom and gloom with you, we will have none of it. And when you come across one of those gloomy forecasts, be sure to read the small print details:
“… the climate will be between one half and one degree cooler than normal averages…”
As I look across my terrace and see the sun sparkling on the pool, I check the temperature gauge: it’s 36˚C today, which is above the average for this time of year.
