Traditional property that won’t break the bank

by Almonds and Oranges

Popular UK TV show, A Place in the Sun, helps viewers find the home of their dreams. In a recent episode of the programme, Jackie and her Portuguese partner Hilario, who live in the UK, were visiting eastern Algarve in search of the perfect holiday home.

It was love at first sight for both of them, when they walked into the second of a total of five properties that they were invited to view. Sadly for the couple, their offer was refused and the programme closed by saying that they were still negotiating.

Traditional Property Castro Marin AlgarveThe programme highlights the fact that not everyone’s idea of a perfect home in the Algarve is a seafront apartment or a modern townhouse. If your dream residence is more along the lines of a traditional Algarvean house in a typical Portuguese community, then you’re on the right track here.

We can certainly understand why Jackie and Hilario fell in love with this delightful traditional house in the centre of Castro Marim. The property is listed on Meravista by Casas do Sotavento at €100,000 and it’s a wonderful example of the choice of charming traditional Portuguese properties for sale in this price range, across the Algarve.

We went in search of similar properties for sale between €60,000 and €150,000 across the region. Take a look at what we found…

Traditional Property Tavira Algarve

A must-view small property in a popular Algarvean town

There really are some great bargains to be had in eastern Algarve. This typical two-story village house in the heart of Tavira is for sale at just €98,000. It has been carefully refurbished and comprises a living area and kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. Located on a narrow cobbled street in a quiet residential area, the property is within walking distance of all local amenities.

Traditional Property Pero Ponto Ameixal Algarve Portugal

A peaceful refuge from the demands of daily life

Taking our search a little further west to the Loulé Municipality and Pero Ponto - Ameixal, a typical Algarvean village close to the Alentejo, where we found a charming three bedroom, two bathroom cottage for €125,000. A comfortable home with modern facilities and a wood burning stove for those cooler nights. The sunny terrace features a Jacuzzi and provides views across the countryside.

Traditional Property Benafim Algarve Portugal

Step back in time to this typically Algarvean community

Staying in the Loulé Municipality, but moving south west to Benafim, you couldn’t get more traditional than this quaint little semi-detached two bedroom house on the outskirts of the village. On the market at €110,000, it has been tastefully adapted for modern living. This deceptively spacious home has a small courtyard garden and is close to local amenities.

Traditional Property Silves AlgarveAn ideal holiday home not far from historic Silves

Heading further west across country from Benafim to Silves, just 6km from the town centre, we found this rustic stone-built Algarvean cottage. Set in a tranquil semi-rural location, it’s on the market for €120,000 and open to offers. This property dates back over 100 years and has been renovated to a good standard. It has a good-sized, fenced and well-maintained garden, with an ornamental plunge pool and a traditional stone BBQ.

A hidden gem

Traditional Property Pateiro Algarve Portugal

Travelling down the Arade River from Silves towards the mouth of the estuary, there are a number of little communities tucked away off the road. One such community is Paterio in the Lagoa area, where this renovated two bedroom house is for sale at €89,890. A choice of two investment opportunities

Traditional Property Barao de Sao Joao Algarve PortugalOur next stop was much further west, past Lagos and 12 km inland from Salema, in the delightful village of Barão de São João, where we found two charming properties. Close to the national forest of Barão de São João, just 20 minutes’ drive from the vibrant town of Lagos and only a few kilometres from Praia da Luz and Espiche Golf, both homes present excellent investment opportunities.

The first will set you back just €68,500. This two bedroom town house in the centre of the village was partially refurbished in 2009 and is in good condition throughout. It wouldn’t take a lot of cash to add your own stamp to this traditional abode.

A holiday home with rental potential

Traditional Property Pedralva Vila do Bispo Algarve PortugalThe last leg of our search takes us down to the stunning west coast. Pedralva is a wonderful little village near Vila do Bispo that was brought back to life by Lisbon business man António Ferreira in 2010. António bought up several ruins in the village and restored them to their former glory. The property we found here carries a price tag of €95,000 and has two bedrooms. A short drive from a choice of fabulous beaches and the coastal town of Sagres, one of the Algarve’s most unspoilt areas, this property would make a wonderful holiday home and it has excellent rental potential too.
