Alyson and Dave Sheldrake burst onto the Algarve scene in a blaze of colour, Dave with his wonderful photographs and Alyson with her vibrant acrylic paintings. Their career paths in the UK led them through many years in the police service and, for Alyson, a successful diversion into education. But, like so many of us expats here in the Algarve, they eventually decided to follow their hearts. So they packed their bags and equipment, and headed for the sunshine to indulge their artistic sides.
They quickly became part of the Algarve community and held their first exhibition in 2012, aptly named “Inspired by Light”, at the Holiday Inn in Armação de Pěra. This proved to be a huge success. A year later they held another equally successful exhibition, this time at the Carvoeiro Sol Hotel and, the very next day, they set up their stand at the International Algarve Fair in Lagoa!
Alyson got very involved with the Fair’s Dog Show, one of the big attractions at the annual event. She painted a portrait of Digby, who won “Best in Show” on the second day. Since then she has donated 10% of all her Pet Portrait earnings to SOS Algarve Animals, a charity set up to help all animals in need in the region.
A pet portrait is a wonderful gift to give and receive. I myself was privileged and absolutely delighted to receive a beautiful portrait of Taz(my Girlie) for Christmas!

Meanwhile, Dave has been taking some fantastic photographs of the Algarve and its stunning beaches, especially at sun rise and sun set, they really are superb.
So mark a date in your diary for their latest exhibition at the Hotel Carvoeiro Sol from Friday 18th April until Wednesday 23rd April. The exhibition is openfrom 11am to 7pm each day.
Back again at the International Algarve Fair
The Sheldrake’s will have a stand at the International Algarve Fair again this year on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June. If you have a dog, don’t forget to enter him or her in the Dog Show. Alyson will be painting free portraits of the two ‘Best in Show’ winners.
