Although the winter weather in the Algarve seldom puts a stop to outdoor living, it’s a good time to check out some of the indoor activities on offer and to try something new.
We’ve picked a selection of seven ideas for making the most of the winter months in the Algarve.

If you prefer your music live, this great music café in Alcantarilha is worth a visit. Step off the busy Silves - Algoz road into the warm ambiance of O Feedback. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm and Sundays from 1pm. You can enjoy a tasty candlelit meal or a hearty Sunday roast accompanied by some great live music. If you enjoy making music, why not join in the weekly jam session or book a spot on open mic night.
3. Lewis Andrews
If you’re hunting for a special gift or just fancy indulging yourself, head over to Almancil. Lewis Andrews, the Algarve’s new lifestyle store, offers shoppers everything from the practical to the unusual, from nice-to-haves to must-haves. The store and café are open from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm. Drop in for a browse and a coffee.
4. Muxima
You could argue that every day is a holiday living in the Algarve, but sometimes we all need a break away from daily life. Well, you don’t need to travel too far. Muxima is an Africa-themed boutique hotel set in the tranquil surroundings of Montes Ferreiros in Aljezur. If you’re in need of a place to escape to, Muxima, meaning Heart in the Angolan dialect Kimbundu, is just what the doctor ordered.
5. Algarveans Experimental Theatre Group
If you’re a budding or aspiring thespian, here’s your chance to tread the boards. The Algarveans are one of the most professional amateur dramatic groups I have ever had the pleasure of watching perform. They’re based here in the Algarve and stage most of their shows at the excellent Lagoa Auditorium. They welcome members of all ages and nationality, and you won’t have to audition for membership. If you’re less into acting and more into being entertained, look out for the upcoming pantomime ‘Babes in the Wood’ in February.
6. Academia de Musica de Lagos
If you’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument or to improve your musical skills, the Academia de Musica de Lagos can probably help out. They offer lessons in all types of instrument. But, if you’d rather move to the music, how about signing up for dance lessons? The Academia’s dance department has recently opened and provides lessons in all popular dances.
7. Centro de Línguas de Lagos
Wouldn’t it be great to speak Portuguese like a local?
This small, friendly language school in the centre of Lagos, is recognised by the Portuguese Ministry of Education. The school offers group or private lessons by qualified and experienced teachers. If you’re already fluent in Portuguese, you might want to add Spanish, German or French to your language skills.
