If you live in Silves or you’re visiting the town, it’s well worth making time for a visit to the charming Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório. Almost a century after the theatre first opened its doors, this delightful cultural space has been lovingly restored and brought back to life by Silves town council.
The theatre was founded by Mascarenhas Gregório in 1909. The venue quickly developed and became home to the Philharmonic Society Silvense in the late 1930s. Sadly though, in more recent years, the theatre had been allowed to lapse into a bad state of disrepair, which led to its closure and further deterioration.
As the theatre endured decades of neglect, Silves was in danger of losing an important piece of its heritage. It was welcome news to residents and tourists, when the building was purchased in 1987 by Silves Câmara (the local council) and, in 2003, work began to restore the venue to its former glory. Wherever possible, original materials were reused. The wrought iron balustrades, painted columns, and carved wood decorations were some of the original features which were taken away to be restored by a team of experts. However, much of the theatre’s structures were beyond repair and had to be replaced. The theatre reopened briefly in 2005, but closed again for total renovation costing around €2 million.
In September 2012, the curtain went up once again at Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório. The transformation is truly remarkable. This work of architectural art exudes the grandeur of a large traditional theatre, such as can be found in London’s West End. However, it has a cosy and personal ambiance which befits its smaller size. Numerous plays, musicals, operas and concerts have been performed on its new stage already and a varied programme of shows is planned for the coming months.
Silves Council (and all the restoration workers of course) certainly deserve to be congratulated on a superb job.

It seems a great shame that the theatre doesn’t have its own website or even a Facebook page, to help promote the venue and the shows held there. It really is a great place to sit back and be entertained. Meravista will do its best to help publicise what’s on at the theatre over the coming months, so please let us know if you are staging a performance at the venue. Look out for posts on our blog and also on our Facebook page and please share them too.
