“It ain’t what you’ve got it’s the way that you use it”. Nudge, nudge; wink, wink.
We all know they’re not referring to money. But to my way of thinking, it should apply to money! Just as it doesn’t make sense to have a shed load of dosh and hide it under the mattress, so too, having a small amount of money and using it unwisely makes no sense either. What to do?
Valuable advice
Charles Dickens knew a thing or two about money and, as his famous Mr Macawber said:
"If you earn £20 a year and spend all but 6d of it – you will be happy.
However if you earn £20 a year and spend £20 and 6d – you will be miserable."
Or words to that effect (yes people did earn £20 per annum).
Lesson learned, live within your means. But don’t waste that extra 6d that you haven’t spent – invest it! Bricks and mortar are a pretty good bet right now.
Sitting pretty
Of course, if you’re flush and don’t need to use your spare cash for a couple of years, then investing in property right now is probably a very sensible thing to do. Property prices in the Algarve have not only levelled out but are gradually starting to rise, so in a few years’ time you could be sitting on some pretty good assets.
The Algarve, where the property prices are good value-for-money is now attracting many more serious investors; property is always a good investment, it always has been and no doubt always will be.
Doing very nicely thank you
You’re earning a good salary, getting nice fat bonuses, have a company car and all the usual perks. You may not be a millionaire, but life is good and things are going well. So, how do you invest your money wisely? How do you ensure the maximum benefits for you and your family?
Investing in a property market where prices are just starting to rise is a pretty safe bet. A property market that sits in the sun and where the cost of living is relatively cheap has to be a winner in the long term. Not only will your investment grow, but the whole family benefits from this “perk” all year round. The Algarve ticks all the boxes.
Got a healthy bank balance
OK, so how about this scenario? You have a decent salary and your partner/spouse is working too. The kids are doing well and have everything that all the other kids have. The next step is to invest for your retirement and what better way than to have a home in the sun for holidays now, and to rest on your hard earned laurels later. Buying a decent property in the Algarve need not cost an arm and a leg and it can be easy to rent it out in the high season to help cover the bills. The flight time to Faro from Northern Europe is quick and there are plenty of low cost fares, especially during low season. There’s so much going on all year round and the temperate climate makes this a very attractive option for investment and for the future.
Living the life
Fact: the Portuguese are a welcoming lot, in fact the Government has made it even easier for expatriates to buy and live here.
Fact:Being absorbed into the local community here is very flattering but all the old traditions survive and thrive, which makes for an interesting life.
Fact:Grand (and not so grand) festivals are plentiful each month; all kinds of sports and activities are flourishing all year round too.
Fact:The golf courses are par excellence (pardon the pun) and the sunshine seems endless somehow.

Make your money work in the Algarve
