A short 15 minutes by car brings you into the heart of Olhão (pronounced ‘ol-yow’) which lies just to the east of Faro in the Algarve. One of the smallest of the Algarve counties, it nevertheless has much to offer.
The city of Olhão lies on the coast in the heart of the Ria Formosa nature reserve, and is the Algarve’s biggest fishing port. The Mercado municipal offers a large selection of both fish and shellfish, and is conjoined by a large vegetable market. It’s a regular haunt for fish merchants, restaurateurs and casual shoppers alike.
With a pretty promenade along the coast full of restaurants offering al-fresco dining, and an old town made up of cobbled narrow lanes full of cafés and local shops, the area is popular with tourists, locals and expat residents alike. The town also brags its modern areas including a big shopping mall, and many other attractions.
Olhão county is dotted with picturesque villages and small towns. Moncarapacho lies in the Algarve’s foothills and is famous for its big marketon the first Sunday of the month. From clothes, shoes, table and bed linens, to plants and hardware, local farm cheeses and chouriços, it’s a popular event.
A small traditional town, surrounded by hills dotted with villas, the area offers a return to the quiet life but with all amenities within easy reach.
