Things to do in the Algarve for June 2014

by Sun’s Dragon

Summer’s here and it’s not just the weather that’s hotting up, or the beaches that are filling up, it’s much more. As you will see here, the social calendar is taking off! There’s so much going on now that I can’t keep up, so I’ve selected a variety of things to do, places to visit and interesting events that are happening during this glorious month of June.

Digging deep

The Algarve Archaeological Association is giving a lecture entitled “Did Language Begin with Homo Sapiens?” at two venues in the region on 3rd of June. Both lectures will be in English, the first takes place in the Museum of São Brás at 3pm and the second lecture is at the Convento of Lagoa at 7.15pm. Antonio Almeida is the speaker and all are welcome. A donation of €6 Euros for non-members is required.

For additional information call Maxine on 917 267 948 or visit the Association’s website

Kicking off

Throughout the World Cup, from the 6th June to 20th July, the gardens and areas by the dockside in Faro will have large screens for you to watch all the footie you could wish for. All the matches will be shown and there will be two stages hosting a variety of entertainment. There will also be an area dedicated to kids entertainment, just in case they’re not interested in football. Food and drink stalls complete the scene. So don your favourite “strip” and go down to cheer on your teams!

All that jazz

The open air amphitheatre at the riverside parkland in Sítio das Fontes in Estõmbar, Lagoa, is holding an International Jazz Festival from 5th to 7th June. Performances start at 10pm although the park is open from 7pm.

For more information on this exciting event call 282 416 093

or email: [email protected]

Trade fair and dog show

Once again the Fatacil Showground in Lagoa will be hosting the International Algarve Fair on 7th and 8th June. This is a not-to-be-missed occasion with something for everyone, regardless of age. Featuring everything for the home and garden, plus some great entertainment, each day is a non-stop event. There’s also the dog shows on both days, where dogs of all sizes, breeds and backgrounds (including our beloved mongrels), will be putting their best paws forward. A fun time for all the family from 11am to 7pm each day. Children under 12 enter for free and adults pay around €3 each.

To contact the organisers call 282 380 317 or visit the Fair’s website

Hail to the snail

The 7th Snail Festival is on the 6th to 8th June in Colina do Revelim de Santo António in Castro Marim. This is when the humble snail comes into its own and you get a chance to try this local delicacy. See how they are prepared, cooked and devoured with gusto! Of course, there will be plenty of other things to do and see, so take a trip and get stuck in.

Clever stuff

Alcoutim is holding its 29th Crafts and Ethnography Fair on the 7th and 8th June at the Praia Fluvial (river beach). Here you’ll find local artisans demonstrating their craft work and exhibiting the local produce; see how it’s done. Naturally, being the Algarve, there will be music, entertainment and food to accompany the crafting and display of these wonderful products.

On your toes

The Figuras Theatre (the municipal theatre) in Faro is putting on a Russian classical ballet performance of the endearing Shakespearean Romeo & Juliet on 9th June. The performance begins at 9pm and tickets cost €25 and €28 per person.

For more information visit the Theatre’s website (in Portuguese).

The fast track

From the 6th to 8th June the International GT Open will be taking place at the Algarve International Autodrome in Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão. Also taking place will be the F3 Championship and Spanish Iber GT. Super cars such as the Porsche, Ferrari, Mercedes and many more will be taking part.

Home sweet home

A home and garden show is to be held at the Portimão Arena from the 7th to 10th June. This exhibition will include furniture, decorations, lighting and swimming pools. For further details, contact the Junta de Freguesia in Portimão on 282 402 140 or email: [email protected]

Staying safe

The Association for Safe Communities Algarve has been giving some very interesting seminars on forest fires and what to do if you spot a fire or a dangerous situation. These seminars will continue throughout June in different parts of the Algarve, in order to help expatriates with all safety aspects. If you would like to know more about these seminars please call 913 045 093 or visit the Safe Communities website.

The more help they get from the public, the more they are able to assist the public in keeping our community safe.

Classical concert

SOS Algarve Animals and St Luke’s Anglican Church at Palhagueira will be the beneficiaries of the proceeds from this Classical Music Concert. It's taking place at Igreja São Sebastião (the church opposite the Municipal library) in Tavira on 14th June at 8pm. Entry is €10.

Popular saints’ festivals

St Anthony, St John and St Peter all have their feast days in June and the Portuguese know how to celebrate their “popular saints”. There will be parties, processions and dancing along the length and breadth of the Algarve from the 22nd to 29th June. Streets and buildings will be decorated with coloured paper and the sardines will be grilled to perfection.

Check with your local Junta to find out where there’s a party near you.

Golf for strays

The fabulous Vila Sol golf course is where all the golfers out there need to be on the 22nd June. A round of stableford will be played, with a shotgun start at 9am, to help raise money for SOS Algarve Animals. The cost is €70 which includes the golf, a lunch and drinks. After lunch there will be a quiz and an auction, so this is definitely a fun day out for a good cause.

To book your place either email [email protected] or call 289 314 530.

City festival

Tavira is celebrating the Day of the City on 24th June (St John’s feast day), as they do each year. There will be decorated streets, much sardine grilling and music and dancing.

To find out more you can call the Junta de Freguesia in Tavira on 289 844 112.

Beer festival

Praça dos Pescadores (The town square) in Albufeira is the place to be for the Algarve Beer Festival. Taking place from 26th to 29th of June, there will be more than 40 brands of beer on tap for your enjoyment; beers from Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Greece and England. Each evening there will be music, food and entertainment to accompany your drink!

Festival Med

Once again Loulé is hosting this festival from 25th to 28th of June in the historic centre of the town. Street artists, live music, and local food create the party scene. You can get your tickets for this exciting event at Cine Teatro in Loulé, but if you’re not sure what it’s all about and would like to take a look before you buy, go on the first night – it’s free!

For ticket prices and to buy tickets online click here (in Portuguese).

Living in this beautiful region is fun with lots of things to do and see but, my oh my, our social calendars fill up so quickly! I’m not complaining, don’t get me wrong, I would rather be busy than bored and nobody is ever bored when they live here!
