Alamos Golf Course

Álamos Golf course is a short but stunning test for golf. Having stunning views of the Monchique mountains, lakes and farmland, there is a real sense of getting away from it all here. It is shorter than Morgado (Par 71) but it has all the features necessary to fulfil the expectations of the most demanding player.

More than a test of golf, this is a course which attests to the harmony which may be achieved between the man-made and nature itself.

Benamor Golf Logo

Benamor Golf Course

The decision to build a golf course, on the land of Quinta de Benamor, in Tavira, Algarve,  was made in 1986. The Owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton to make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry Cotton was inspired by the beautiful old church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by the spectacular location.

The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5.500 metres (6.100 yards), which offers a pleasant playing experience, to players of all standards. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many centuries old, feature aesthetically and in playing terms. Water hazards and sand bunkers are located to test the strategy and striking ability of the player. The Penn A4 greens and tees are simply superb

The course, blessed with stunning views from all sides, with the Bay of Lagos to the East and the impressive backdrop of the Monchique Mountains to the North, is a stern test for golfers of all standards.

With two distinctive sections the course offers a variety of holes commencing with the welcoming first hole, a meandering downhill par-4, bordered by beautiful sub-tropical landscaping leading to harmoniously designed properties.

The first nine, in general, climb to the highest point of the resort, where a pause at the eighth tee will allow one to experience panoramic views. Subsequent holes descend to an area where water features, streams, lakes and arched bridges, reminiscent of landscaped gardens abound.

Without doubt the Signature Hole on the outward nine is the stunning par 3, 6th Hole, at 194m one of the most challenging par three holes in the Algarve

Espiche Golf | Espiche

Espiche Golf Logo

Espiche Golf Course

One of the unique features of our Algarve golf course is simply what’s not  there! The beautiful rolling terrain, native vegetation, lakes, streams and flowers that line our fairways are only bordered by unspoiled countryside and local vineyards! No towering hotels or condominium projects. No villas lining the fairways. Nothing but the natural beauty of the Algarve framed by the majestic Monchique Mountains in the distance.

With 5862 meters (6411 yards) from the back tees, ours is a strategic layout that demands careful thought and shot planning rather than brute force to get the best from your round. The rolling hills and frequent doglegs mean you’ll need to work the ball both ways.

And from the moment you step out on the tee box, you'll experience a sense of awe at the beauty of the layout before you. Tree-lined fairways are both tight and forgiving. From the fairways, the course at Espiche requires a deft touch with your short game. Bunkers guard most greens while the greens themselves are large and undulating, demanding a soft hand with the putter. Espiche is a challenging yet fun layout: a shot-maker’s course where you’ll enjoy an amazing variety of holes not found on most courses.

The par five 1st, dropping some 80 feet from the tee before rising back to the same height at the green, gives you some idea of the views and challenged to come. The 3rd provides the sternest test on the front nine at 409 meters uphill all the way before the short seventh and eighth offer birdie opportunities.

The par five tenth is surely one of the finest in the Algarve and, while you may be tempted to go for the green in two, the fairway gets progressively tighter as you near the green. The risk-reward nature of the course is apparent on many holes and you’ll always feel you left a few out there to be improved upon on your next round.

You'll relish every shot and every hole as you enjoy golf in the Algarve the way it was meant to be experienced: on a fun and challenging course that takes full advantage of its picturesque setting.

Gramacho Hole 10

After his success designing the Vale de Pinta course, Ronald Fream teamed up with the former world No. 1 Nick Price to create the unique design of Gramacho. With 18 holes and 27 greens, plus numerous different tee points, players are able to enjoy the same course time and time again but always with slightly different challenges.

Having hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open on a number of occasions Pestana Gramacho is recognized as a championship course enjoyable and playable even by those with a higher handicap.

Apart from the fantastic golf design, Ronald and Nick managed to incorporate the traditional landscape by utilizing the natural stone outcrops, historical dry stone walling and existing ancient trees with some artfully sculpted lakes and bunkers. The effect is a wonderful journey through the countryside

The Monte Rei resort is set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south.

The first of two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses - "Monte Rei North" - opened for play in June 2007. This par 72 Championship golf course measuring 6567m from the Tournament tees is a truly unique design; with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, the golf course features an enjoyable series of eight par-4s, five par-3s and five par-5s in a challenging and distinctive layout.

The golf course's presentation is highly individual, each hole a design gem blending effortlessly into this natural canvas, from its ingeniously shaped and sculptured bunkers, to the impressive presentation and attention to detail making every hole as remarkable as the next; fairways and greens are bordered by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees adding drama to the landscape, and providing golfers with unforgettable moments to cherish in this unique and tranquil golf environment.

Morgado  | Portimão

Morgado Golf Logo

Morgado Golf Course

Set in a valley in the inner Algarve, between Portimão and Monchique, Morgado Golf course is a challenge both for those taking their first steps in golf as for the more experienced player, who would like to test his technique. The scorecard shows a PAR 73, but the course path length is attenuated by the generous width of fairways. However, less accurate strokes may be penalized by the action of one of several bunkers spread across the field.

We can say that the Morgado Golf is a course with the characteristics of a links - with flat fairways and Scottish inspiration bunkers - but instead of being close to the shore as traditional links, it is inserted into an area of parkland. Surrounded by the region traditional tree species, the player who visits Morgado Golf contacts with a different Algarve, calm and serene, providing the perfect setting for a memorable round.

Oceanico Faldo  | Alcantarilha

Oceanico Faldo Logo

Oceanico Faldo Course

Designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m par 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.

"The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. With so many courses in the region, that’s no mean feat," pointed out Nick Faldo, during his visit in 2007.

In a modern twist of a traditional recipe, cacti and wild herbs replace the role of Sunningdale’s heather, spartan Holm oaks and ancient olive trees take the place of a lush English woodland, and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone replace Berkshire’s sandy tracts in a golf course that revels in the classic principles of strategic play.

Nick said: "This was a very exciting project, which gave me a great opportunity to exploit my passion for design the same way I exploited my passion for playing. You have incredible views, beautiful undulating land and any time you have natural terrain like this, it is great fun to work with."

"The real skill is that when you stand on the tee, the golf hole tells you what to do and if you do what it tells you there is reward but if you don’t you’re penalised. The back nine is quite hilly, which is fantastic because we’ve got some great views to complement the course."

"I like my courses to be challenging to whoever plays them. There might be easy holes in some places, but they are a challenge because you have to think about them, and that is what I am after. The best compliment you can get in the design business is when players come off the course and say ’wow, that was a challenge,’ and that’s just what I planned at Amendoeira Golf Resort."

Oceanico Laguna  | Vilamoura

Oceanico Laguna Logo

Oceanico Laguna 12th Hole

Laid out over low lying coastal terrain, this course, with its many water hazards and few trees, is considerably different from the other ones in Vilamoura and many of its holes convey a links atmosphere.

U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which opened in 1990 and many previous visitors will recognise it as part of the former 27 hole Vilamoura III course. It has been subject to continual improvements over the years.

Measuring 6121m from the white tees, the par 72 course includes several lakes which influence play on a total of 11 holes. In addition to acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, these lakes serve a useful purpose in attracting a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters and terrapins.

Vilamoura's master developers, Lusotur, have also established an environmental nature park not far from the course.

Apart from the lakes and an impressive total of 79 bunkers, another hazard is the wind that frequently blows over this somewhat exposed location.

The Oceanico Laguna course shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Oceanico Millennium course.

Oceanico Millennium  | Vilamoura

Oceanico Millennium Logo

Oceanico MIllennium 15th Hole

This conventional PAR 72 course opened in the year 2000, although the original back nine was formerly part of the 27-hole Laguna Course. Refurbishment to the existing nine holes commenced in May 1999 and included the complete rebuilding of the tees, greens and bunkers, particularly for holes 8 and 9, the only ones on this loop with water hazards, with the aim to simplify the strategy of the course to make it more golfer-friendly. The renovated 9 holes were joined together with the new 9-hole loop to offer a layout of different character, style and playing quality. The work was undertaken by the well-established UK golf Architects Hawtree & Sons which culminated in the creation of the new, exciting 18-hole Oceanico Millennium golf course.

The course is particularly open, although some holes (the 3rd to the 7th) wind between pine trees and are similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Oceanico Old Course and Oceanico Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. The arrival of the Oceanico Millennium course made Vilamoura one of the main - if not the main - European golf destinations.

Oceanico O'Connor Jnr.  | Alcantarilha

Oceanico O'Connor Jnr. Logo

Oceanico O'Connor Jnr. 8th Hole

Designed by Christy O’Connor Jnr., this course complements the neighbouring Oceanico Faldo Course and also takes full advantage of being situated in a fertile valley. Its various water features, both lakes and watercourses that are spread throughout the entire course, demand accuracy and test from all golfers, and the rich topsoil has been skillfully landscaped and planted with mature palm trees, affording a lush, ornamental setting like an extensive oasis.

This course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are strong features.

Holes 7, 8 and 9, average length par 4’s, offer a particular challenge as all three run alongside lakes, so golfers’ concentration and accuracy of tee-shots as well as approaches are vital. 3rd and 17th holes are both excellent par 3’s.

Two consecutive par 4’s, the 14th and 15th with large rolling greens, are tough hurdles to overcome at such a critical stage of the round, and then the finishing hole, 356m off the white tee, requires a precision drive to set up the approach to a two tier green benched into the hillside. Christy's 18th hole brings the course to a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. 'This hole is a humdinger; once you get up here and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.'

Oceanico Old Course 6th Green

Situated in the heart of Vilamoura a mere 20 minute drive from Faro airport, this Frank Pennink designed parkland style layout is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world.

Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees - the principal hazard - over gently undulating natural terrain. Although it opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised 27 years later although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.

In addition to raising the Oceanico Old Course to new heights of quality, an attractive new clubhouse and adjacent putting green were also built at that time. As with all Oceanico courses, environmental protection practices are strictly adhered to by means of detailed management systems in line with guidelines established by ISO 14001 standards, Green Globe and Committed to Green programmes.

This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers.

Oceanico Pinhal 5th Hole

This was the second golf course built in Vilamoura and inaugurated in 1976, having originally been designed by Frank Pennink, the architect of the nearby Oceanico Old Course.

Several refinements were incorporated over the years, the most significant one by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. The course is typified by rolling parkland terrain covered with numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that line many of the fairways and a few even stand out on fairways or near greens.

Ponds and a stream come into play on five holes but are not serious threats to above-average golfers. To keep up with modern technical advances in clubs and balls, several holes have recently been lengthened and the PAR 72 course now measures 6353m off the white tee markers.

The clubhouse was completely renovated and modernised at the turn of the millennium and from the large veranda one can enjoy a panoramic view over the excellent driving range and practice facilities.

Oceanico Victoria 18th Hole

The Oceanico Victoria , which covers some 90 hectares, is the most recent golf course project of Arnold Palmer in Portugal. As one of the best and most sophisticated golf courses in Europe, every care has been taken to ensure the preservation of the wetlands and the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. Several lakes, occupying 13 hectares, provide mirrors of water and strategic reservoirs for irrigation.

The course features 5 or 6 tees per hole; wide, undulating fairways; extensive water hazards and cleverly positioned bunkers. In addition there is an exceptional driving range and a putting green of some 2,500m².

Palmares Logo

Palmares Lagos Course

The Alvor Course

Located primarily on the northern part of the site, the Alvor Course has a parkland character with mature trees and lovely views of the Monchique hills.  Changes in elevation are integral to the design of this nine as a majority of the golf holes ascend hillsides or descend through intimate valleys. The parkland setting disappears briefly with a series of holes with more expansive views.  A preview of the dunes and links holes to come is provided in the sixth and seventh holes. As the round concludes, the course again assumes the parkland character.

The Lagos Course

The Lagos Course begins with the same parkland character. This course incorporates the only two lakes found on the entire site at the short par-3 third hole and the long par-4 sixth hole. Holes seven and eight immerse golfers into the expansive dune lands on the southwestern portion of the site. The round concludes with a climb to the clubhouse and back into a more parkland setting.

The Praia Course

The third nine at Palmares presents the golf experience every great designer dreams of having the privilege to create: a seaside landscape with dunes exposed to the elements. The four seaside holes are between the beach and the railway line. The course opens by descending from a parkland setting.  The second hole then whisks golfers into the true links part of the course. This dunes character is continued through the remainder of the Praia Golf Course with the closing hole, a strong uphill par-5, rising up out of the dunes through a deep valley to an amphitheatre just below the clubhouse.

Parque da Floresta | Budens

Parque da Floresta Logo

Parque da Floresta Golf Course

Parque da Floresta is located amongst rolling, hilly terrain near the south-western tip of Portugal, the 'Land's End' of Continental Europe.

The layout, designed by former Spanish amateur champion Pepe Gancedo, architect of the well-known Torrequebrada course near Malaga in Spain, was virtually carved out of the hills and many of the natural contours were retained.

Because of this, most of the holes, especially on the first nine, are testing and at first sight may be daunting for beginners. But this is what intrigues those who play it for the first time. The tendency is for golfers to go back time and again in an attempt to master the trickier holes. It is a case of the greater the challenge, the better the reward.

Unlike most courses, the controversial Parque da Floresta has an infinite variety of holes, each one with individual character.

A combination of finesse and long precise shots is essential to score well. The owners, who acquired the complex at the end of 1993, have embarked on a programme of continuous course improvement. Several fairways which formerly had side slopes have been levelled out and attractively landscaped.

Pine Cliffs Golf Course

Perched 200 feet above the golden sands and blue water of the Atlantic Ocean lies the immaculate Pine Cliffs Golf Course. The location of the resort is unique. It extends across 168 acres of naturally beautiful land set above a stunning cliff top, beneath lies an expanse of golden sand beach and the deep blue water of the Atlantic Ocean. The dark red of the sandstone cliffs contrasts sharply with the immaculate green of the golf course above and the sparkling blue ocean below.

This is one of the country’s most original golf courses, built in a pinewood setting, with tree lined fairways running parallel along the Atlantic Ocean, giving it's guests breathtaking views along the Algarvian coastline.  Architect Martin Hawtree’s main concern was to keep the natural surroundings as it was before the course was built.

The jewel of this perfectly kept course is the Par 3 sixth hole. The championship tee is built over a ravine that requires a 198 metre carrying shot over the cliffs to a deep but narrow green

Pinheiros Altos 8th Hole

Pinheiros Altos is established as one of the most prestigious and successful premier golf and leisure resorts in Europe, and owns a 27 hole Championship golf course.

The original 18 holes were designed by the respected American architect Ronald Fream and the additional 9 holes, created by the highly regarded Portuguese golf architect George Santana da Silva, opened in 2007.

The 27 hole Championship Pinheiros Altos Golf is presented in three contrasting nine hole formats. Each nine holes is a PAR 36:

9 Hole Pines Golf Course
The Pinheiros Altos Pines Course (Pinheiros) is named after the abundance of pine trees which abound the course, this nine includes four of the new holes opened in January 2007 and five of the original front nine. One thousand additional pine trees were planted to blend the new with old.

9 Hole Corks Golf Course
The Corks Course (Sobreiros) is the longer of the three nine holes at Pinheiros Altos and regarded as the most demanding, especially due to the difficulty of the eighth hole.

9 Hole Olives Golf Course
The Olives Course was the original back nine and has remained unchanged since the island green eighth hole was constructed in 1995 and has one of the golf courses signatures holes.

All nine holes have their starting and finishing points in close proximity to the beautiful Pinheiros Altos Clubhouse. Each hole has four starting tees: The white and yellow tees represent the championship and medal tees respectively for the men, the red and blue tees for the ladies.

Firm, Fast and Testing Greens

The firm, fast and testing greens, sown with Pentcross Bent and combined with the Bermuda fairway grass, provide resilient and excellent surfaces on which to play golf and make Pinheiros Altos a must play course when visiting the Algarve. The 27 championship holes at the Pinheiros Altos Resort are presented in three nine holes formats.

Quinta do Lago North Course | Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago North Course Logo

Quinta do Lago North Course

The North Course is the newest addition to Quinta do Lago’s five-star golf facilities, the totally revamped course has been one of the most talked about golf projects in 2014 and is set to be one of the new stars of European golf and the new number one course at Quinta do Lago.

Redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout has been built to the highest specifications with a €9.6m investment. The North Course has been redeveloped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy.

Among the changes introduced on the 6,776-yard course which has been closed since last December, all greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation and drainage systems and cart paths have been rebuilt using the latest state-of-the-art technology. Four sets of tees have been introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels and golfers will be challenged by a combination of undulating greens, well-positioned bunkers and water hazards.

A low-cut Bermuda grass approach has been introduced around greens to create a myriad of recovery shot options for increased satisfaction on all levels of play. The aesthetics of the par-72 course have also significantly improved through the introduction of a cool season rough grass and the select planting of native grasses and specimen trees to help the environment. The renovation has also allowed Quinta do Lago to further reduce the impact on the environment by using recycled water and solar energy to maintain the course. The reduction of grassed areas will lessen the impact on the environment and the new design will include the creation of some new animal and plant habitats.

McGinley said: “I’ve been coming to Quinta do Lago with my family for many years now and it keeps getting better and better. The new design will test golfers in many different ways and I believe this is a great addition to Europe’s leading destination.”

Quinta do Lago South Course | Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago North Course Logo

Quinta do Lago South Course

The jewel in the Quinta do Lago crown, the South Course has played host to the Portuguese Open no less than eight times. Designed in 1974 by William Mitchell, who raised the bar by introducing American-standard greens, tees and bunkers to the Algarve, it soon gained a reputation as one of the foremost courses in Europe and remains to this day one of the flagship European Tour Courses.

The favourite course of many European tour players, it is a 6,500 metre par 72 set amongst umbrella pines, lakes and wild flowers, overlooking the spectacular scenery of the Ria Formosa National Park.

The course hosted the Portuguese Open in 1976, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2001, the most memorable, perhaps, being in 1989 when Colin Montgomerie won the title with an incredible 24 under par. He finished 11 strokes ahead and broke the course record with a round of 63.

Its championship status does not deter the amateur golfer. Indeed, while the 8th, 15th, and 18th are testing holes for low handicap players, the course provides interest and challenge to golfers of all levels and abilities.

Accurate tee shots are essential in order to reach many of the greens in regulation and the course is made more challenging by a good variety of doglegs and strategically located hazards. The front nine holes, which wind their way through parkland, favour a draw, while the back nine, which loop around the lake, favour a fade from the tee.
