Sagres can be found in the south-westernmost point of continental Europe, within the territory of a protected natural park. As such it's one of the Algarve's most unspoilt areas and proudly flaunts its authentic Algarvean charm.
Considerably less tourists flock to Sagres than other towns along the coast. Those that do go mainly for surfing and to admire the stunning views across the Atlantic from the rugged cliffs or on a terrace, drink in hand.
There is a pleasant lack of a rowdy nightlife in town so property in Sagres is well suited to those seeking tranquillity, and fans of a laid-back lifestyle.
Sagres is still a working fishing town with a lot of activity down by the harbour. Its picturesque old streets snake through the town to Praça da República square with benches and terrace bars for catching some rays and getting to know the local community.
Sights worth visiting to get a true feel for the place are:
► Fortaleza de Sagres fortress with a former monastery within
► the lighthouse, one of the most powerful in Europe
► Cap St. Vicente
► the Pousada de Sagres, a long standing, traditional Portuguese hotel.
The town's beaches are also quite the sight to see, many of them sheltered by cliffs which protect swimmers and sunbathers from the wind. There are ample opportunities to indulge in watersports here.
In terms of real estate, there's a great mix of well-priced townhouses and villas for sale in Sagres with many villas boasting unbeatable sea views. Sagres apartments are more compact and come with a lower price tag so there's something to suit all budgets in this Algarvean town.
