Algarve Blue Flag Beaches 2015
by Sun’s Dragon
Did you know?
The Algarve is the most southerly region of Portugal and has some of the best beaches in the world. Between Sagres in the Western Algarve, with its towering cliffs and rocky outcrops, to Vila Real de San Antonio in the Eastern Algarve, with its undulating sand dunes and gentle approaches, there are over 200 km of superb golden sandy beaches.
This year the list of Blue Flag beaches has increased yet again to 85 first class, safe beaches. The coveted Blue Flag is an ecolabel award for beaches and marinas with good practices in terms of water quality, environmental management, safety & services, and environmental education. The four main marinas in the Algarve have also achieved this award too.
You can recognise the award-winning beaches as they are all clearly marked with the Blue Flag emblem. Of these 85 pristine beaches, 61 also have the Accessibility Flag as do all four of the Marinas – Albufeira, Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimao. These beaches and marinas have been adapted specifically for people with reduced mobility.
You can find out exactly which beaches have which flags from Meravista's Blue Flag list, which you can print in order to have this information to hand at all times.

Algarve Beach Safety Flag System
Algarve beaches are also well marked with flags to let visitors know the current status at the beach, which is helpful if you're not familiar with the local currents and undertow.
For additional safety, never sunbathe directly beneath rocky cliffs.
Whether you're a visitor, tourist, part-time or full-time resident, the Algarve's beaches have a lot to offer. Whether you like to top up your tan under the sunshine, build sand-castles with your kids, go body-boarding or surfing, or just relax with a great Portuguese meal or refreshing drink on one of the many terraces overlooking the beaches, there is definitely something for everyone here!
And don't forget, if you want to do this on a regular basis, it's very easy to live here. Full time or part time, there has never been a better opportunity to invest in property for sale in the Algarve.
